TheEasyWay

Drop a file here. Find it there.

TheEasyWay is a folder on your computer and an app on your iPhone. Put a file in one and it turns up in the other, over your own Wi-Fi.

Version 0.1, a beta. Windows 10 and 11. The iPhone app is in testing and on its way to the App Store.

TEW

How it works

1

Open it on your computer

Unzip, open TheEasyWay, and a window shows a QR code.

2

Scan it once

Open the iPhone app and point the camera at the code. That pairs the two. You never do it again.

3

Drop files in the folder

Whatever you put in the TEW folder shows up in the app. Whatever you send from the app lands in a From iPhone folder.

What makes it different

What it does, and what it does not

It does

  • Move photos, PDFs, documents and anything else up to 100 MB each.
  • Put received files in the Files app, on your iPhone under TheEasyWay.
  • Hold a file on your phone while your computer is off, and send it when the computer is back.
  • Say in plain words when it is waiting, and what it is waiting for.

It does not

  • Keep your files in the cloud or sync a whole tree of folders to every device you own.
  • Move files bigger than 100 MB.
  • Work with more than one phone and one computer yet.
  • Run on a Mac or Android yet.
  • Work away from home yet. Both devices need the same Wi-Fi.
  • Wake an iPhone app you force-quit. iOS does not allow it, so open the app when you are expecting something.

How it keeps your files yours

Your phone talks to one computer, and only that one.

iPhone

In testing

iOS 17 or later

The iPhone app is in testing and on its way to the App Store. There is no download link yet. This page will get one the day it is there.

Mac and Android

Not yet

Not built. The folder idea works the same way, so they are on the list.

Windows will warn you. This beta is new and not yet code-signed, so Windows shows “Windows protected your PC”. Check that the hash above matches your download, then choose More info and Run anyway. The first time it runs, Windows also asks about network access: choose Private networks.

Questions

Is this like AirDrop?
Close, and it works with Windows. AirDrop moves files between Apple devices. TheEasyWay moves them between an iPhone and a Windows computer, through a folder.
Why not just use cloud storage?
Cloud storage keeps a copy of your files on someone else's computer and usually wants an account. For one file going to your own computer that is a lot of machinery. TheEasyWay goes straight from one of your devices to the other.
Does my computer have to be on?
To receive what you send, yes. If it is asleep or off the network, the file waits on your phone and goes when the computer is back. Files you drop in the folder wait on the computer until your phone checks in.
Does it work when I am away from home?
Not yet. Both devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi. Working across the internet is something I want to add later; today it is local only, and that is also why nothing about your files touches a server.
Why is there a 100 MB limit?
It stops one huge file from filling your phone or computer. It covers photos, PDFs, documents and short videos.
Where do the files go?
On the iPhone, in the Files app under On My iPhone, then TheEasyWay. On the computer, in the TEW folder in your user folder; files from your phone are inside a From iPhone folder.
What does it cost?
Receiving files from your computer is free. Sending from your phone is a one-time $4.99 unlock in the iPhone app, paid through the App Store.
Windows says it is not safe to run.
Windows warns about programs it has not seen many times. This beta is not code-signed yet, and signing it is on the list before it leaves beta. Check the hash on this page matches your download, then choose More info and Run anyway.
Can I use it on more than one computer or phone?
One iPhone and one computer for now. More devices are planned for a later version.
